I’ve spent the last few days slightly on the sick side of things. Apparently it’s been hitting people back in Oregon recently as well. I hadn’t been feeling well, so I called my program director from school to ask where a nearby clinic was located. She thought that maybe I could just stop by a pharmacist and that it’d be easier to just get something from there.

A few minutes later she called me to meet her down the street at a local pharmacy. After asking me a few questions, the pharmacist lead me into the backroom and administered a shot to “make me feel better.”

Let’s just put it this way – I can say with quite a bit of certainty that it wasn’t FDA approved medicine.

I went back to my room and after about 20 minutes felt quite dizzy and woozy. Feeling as if I might pass out, I quite moving around and sat still.

I literally felt waves of tingling flood across my body as it hit my blood stream.

I’m not quite sure what he gave me.. but he was right in that I felt much better within 30mins.

He gave me some antibiotics and a couple other things .. altogether it cost me just over $20 because Jordan manufactures its own generic pharmaceuticals.

At the same time my roomie Wendy had been admitted to the hospital because of severe stomach pain. She ended up staying there for three nights.. they ran tons of tests, had an IV on her most of the time, took x-rays, an MRI… and altogether it was about $1,000. Amazing huh? The price of healthcare is substantially lower. Apparently an MRI alone can cost about $1,000 in the states.

I am sorry you were sick, not FDA approved yet still working, interesting. So I am using your post to segway into my rant about health coverage in the US.

I want to be a doctor. A medical missionary, I cant and wont practice in the US. Reasons: I cannot see denying a little kid leaukemia treatment because his parents could not afford it. I cant see an EKG costing $400 and I dont understand why a bandaid costs $12 in a hospital. I hate the politics here and I hate the medical issues…rantning complete, sleep initiating.

There’s even talk here of insuarance companies charging people a different (lower) rate if they will do major procedures outside the US.  I’ll let our friends MJGCPA and TooManyMats tell you their experience in India. I kinda like doing medical overseas.  I was hoping we’d go over somewhere and I cound have cosmetic dentistry work done on the dirt cheap.

I think it’s always interesting to compare health care systems in different countries…What an interesting experience.  I  know others who have had medical procedures overseas and have been quite pleased with the results.
