BTW, the article is by a professor at Hopkins … perhaps you would like to move to the vast charm city of Baltimore for graduate studies, but I think that might take you too far a field from the Northern Midwest which seems to have an strange draw for you… ha.

Hey Esther. I merely want to pick your brain which has vast knowledge of the middle east and its modern history that is lacking in my own knowledge. But if you're busy, don't feel the need to worry about my questions. I am merely sitting here perplexed about the war in Iraq and forming a coherent and nuanced theological view of this war. (I tend to lean toward pacificism, but in the end do not feel that I can justify ethically universal pacifism. I like Bonhoeffer for instance--he says that the pacifist is on the side of the angel and yet he participated in a plot to kill Hitler. He viewed himself as incurring guilt for the sake of the other. He was utterly sinful for participating in this plot and yet he had to take on that guilt for the other.) Anyway ... back to my real question...

I just read an article on an opinion page and I feel like I know no one that can help me evaluate its content. This article seemed to challenge me to have a more nuanced view of this war rather than merely being anti-war. I feel as if I am ignorant of so many things so that as I read about the historical implications of this present war hearkening back to the mongul invasion of the Iraqi territory back in the 13th century, it was merely mumbo jumbo to me. The author described the Shi'ites as "the other" which for anyone knowing Christian theology is an entirely loaded term. This author argued that the American presence in Iraq has the ability to unleash years of larger Arab indifference to the plite of the Shi'ites because Sunni's view their rule within the area as a given birthrite. So that this war has the potential to upset years of an oppressive ruling class that has dominated in the region.

Using terms like "the other" for the Shi'ites has so many theological implications for my own theology that I fear I am unable to evaluate the situation properly. "The other" evokes all the images of the Hebrew Bible when YHWH intervenes on behalf of the fatherless and the widow against the ruling elite of Israel. So that this leaves the question of war much more complex in my mind. Do you have any thoughts that can help me work through these ethical questions?

As soon as we get Lost on DVD in Jordan, I’ll check it out. My first priority, however, is Season 4 of Alias…still waiting for it! (I love you too! We should have a race to see who hugs whom first in Louisville. LOL.)

I was about to get up on my soapbox and start preaching about the unhealthy nature of TV addiction...when I caught myself thinking about what my next Xanga entry will be, how many comments I have and might get for a new entry, wondering what everyone else has been posting and how many comments THEY'RE getting, pondering entering the world of blogrings to rack up more Xanga contacts and therefore more comments and eProps...
