As Judge Alito is interrogated by the Senate Judiciary Committee next week, too many Americans will click the channel away as they yawn at the thought of caring about the newest nominee to the Supreme Court. Despite this fact, I thought I’d post a little tribute to our nation’s highest court.

If confirmed, Alito could move the court to the right since he would be replacing the more centrist Sandra Day O’Connor. This has far-reaching implications… everything from the power of the president during war times, to affirmative action and abortion.

I don’t know enough about his record to make an informed decision about whether or not I support his nomination – but I was a bit weary when I saw the spokeswoman for Concerned Women of America stand up and shout how wonderful the man is… My mom receives their propaganda, which has accused public schools that encourage environmentalism as “agents for earth and animal worship”. I read this stuff with my own two eyes and nearly pulled my hair out.

I realized today that I could only name five justices – so I wonder – how many can you name? (answer found in comment section)

Oy. Alito worries me because of his past record on executive authority. The Bush Admin. has greatly expanded the President’s prerogative, and I worry about a justice who might in fact help to exacerbate that trend.

That said, the hearings are meaningless. He’ll be confirmed. The committee will preen, posture, ham it up for the cameras, drop hard-hitting quotes that are meant to get them on the evening news, and otherwise extract no new or interesting information from Alito.

Bonus: Bush says that Alito has “the intellect to bring a lot of class to the court.” What does that even mean? Since when has there been any connection between intellect and class (in that sense)? Could the President define either word on the spot?

The currency over here has a Queen on it, any points for that? My poli sci professor had a thing for the Supreme Court, but I really don’t follow it’s internal dynamics as closely for the social decisions, I’m obviously much more interested in how the replacement will vote on things like privacy and other workplace issues where O’Connor was a key vote.

argghh-i got all but 2. didn’t know jp stevens and forgot breyer. yea, i understand your reservations about an endorsement from cwa. but i wouldn’t dismiss him solely on that fact. i guess one of the primary issues for me is how does he interpret the constitution? i would like to read more about him, albeit not through ANY group’s mouth. i don’t like it when politicians politicize things and it sounds like alito may be in for a “borking.” whatever side you come down on, that just isn’t right. *sigh* i am weary of all politicians. anyway, if you find some good sites that are objective, please post!
