“For many thoughtful people around the world, war is the last of the great social barbarisms and should follow slavery, torture and other historical barbarisms into moral and legal oblivion.”
His hope is that just like we no longer accept “just slavery”, that someday we will also question the moral and legal defences of “just war”. Obviously such a radical proposal requires workable alternatives to resolving political conflicts and providing for human security.
(Right now I’m reading a paper by Elisabeth Porter called “No Just War: Political reflections on Australian churches’ condemnation of the Iraq war”.)
I’ve been deathly afraid of swimwear for as long as I can remember sooo on June 7th I’m going to do the unthinkable… get in a bikini on YouTube & I want YOU to join me. *gasp!*
Why June 7th?
It marks my one year anniversary of joining Weight Watchers and my decision to quit hiding underneath the extra fat.
How to get involved?
Post a comment, video or send a message saying you’ll do it (I’ll keep an updated list of who is in) and then on or around June 7th attach a video of you in your swimwear (doing anything you want) to my vid and a few days later I’ll put a compilation video together showing the YouTubers who were brave enough to accept the challenge, of course set to some sweet music.
This should give everyone who participates that extra incentive to get in better shape for the summer. As its been warming up I’ve been asking myself, “Do I want to eat whatever I want, or wear whatever I want?”
Also, since people kept asking.. I started posting my weekly weigh-in on my channel page… right now I’m at 107lbs (48.5kg) down from 169lbs+ (76.6kg) at this time last year. woo hoo! =)
Now that my essays are completed all I have left is my dissertation – granted, it is the largest single piece of work I’ve yet to do in my academic career. Today I’m strategizing how precisely to tackle this beast, in the least amount of time possible.
Less than five weeks until I arrive in America. I’ll be buying a new suitcase next week as proof it’s actually happening.
Me & my flatmates spend a lot of time in the kitchen (eating, talking, lounging)… here we are.. Rana & Anna… I will miss these two…
My exercise has increased and I’m really pushing myself beyond what I ever believed possible. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment and I look forward to the ongoing challenge of maintenance. I secured a place to live for the summer. My best friend decided she wasn’t able to move to Chicago at the beginning of the summer so I made the choice to go to Milwaukee instead… I don’t need to move to a city without any friends or support. I’ll be subletting a girl’s room through August and living with her two guy roommates. Nick checked it out and he liked it & they liked him… so that’s always good.
It’s a great location for me since it’s not far from Brady St. where lots of shops (& potential summer jobs) are located. Photographic evidence of my room… (although that stuff won’t be there) and the outside of the house.
As dull as the day-to-day can be.. whenever I take a step back from it all I realize just how exciting and adventurous life truly is…
Since I have 3 essays due on Monday my head has been firmly stuck in a rather large pile of books and articles.
In all the reading and studying I’ve done I thought I’d share just one excerpt (my favorite perhaps) from an article on international theory development. You should know that the author, Steve Smith, is hilarious to read – always insightful and witty (a very welcome breath of fresh air when wading through so much material).
Whatever the problems of dealing with this issue in the natural sciences, it will clearly cause more fundamental problems in international theory, where the notion of ‘reality’ can be seen in qualitatively distinct terms. If reality is a problem for scientists, consider what introducing the notion of a socially constructed reality does to the discussion. Thank, for example, of the meaning of terms such as society or the family, or masculinity… dealing with a reality in which our theories are themselves constitutive of that reality is much more problematic.
I’m a fan of Weight Watchers because it helped me drop nearly 70lbs back in grad school – I’m now back on the wagon to lose the last few pounds gained during my pregnancy. After my initial success they hired me to produce content which gets hosted in places like their Facebook page.
On the rare occasion I accept payment to review a product, know that it’ll always be noted in its associated post, and for better or worse, the review will reflect my honest opinion.
