The Irish theologian Enda McDonagh:
“For many thoughtful people around the world, war is the last of the great social barbarisms and should follow slavery, torture and other historical barbarisms into moral and legal oblivion.”
His hope is that just like we no longer accept “just slavery”, that someday we will also question the moral and legal defences of “just war”. Obviously such a radical proposal requires workable alternatives to resolving political conflicts and providing for human security.
(Right now I’m reading a paper by Elisabeth Porter called “No Just War: Political reflections on Australian churches’ condemnation of the Iraq war”.)

I had time to carefully look back, today, at things you are saying and have said, and want to place a comment here. I’m not sure we ever will be in a world without war, until we can deal with the sinfulness of human hearts. I am not sure how we can overcome the evil of this world without being willing to restrain it, and occasionally beat it back with “the sword”. It is the ideal that Messiah will bring when he returns. Do you have any ideas of how we can fight against the evil without warfare?
I’m looking forward to meeting you some time. Hope the transition back to America goes well in about 4 weeks.

Ditto Argilemagne. My thought is always that we need to perpetually wage war in figurative terms against the forces that are keeping people in bondage via slavery or free trade. Whether a world free of that ever exists on earth or not, the important part is making whatever difference you can.

That sounds immensely wonderful. I just wonder if we haven’t made slavery more palatable by calling it free trade and exporting it to developing countries. I mean sure, it isn’t pure slavery. But it certainly isn’t just. I only wish that I were optimistic enough to believe in a world like that.
