Relationships & Ireland

I don’t have many pictures – yano Nick has thousands though… it’s just a matter of him getting them up on Xanga. Ireland was so lovely… the weather… the people… the company =)

The past couple of months had been wearing on me – I’ve felt increasingly isolated and distant from people back home, including Nick. This was the longest time we’d been apart (just over 3 months) and I admit I was a bit nervous about us being together in person again – would it be awkward? would it feel natural?

It took a couple of days to ‘unpack’ emotionally… even though we talk every day on the phone/internet – so much doesn’t get said (particularly on my end). Our schedules don’t work very well because of the time zone differences and if we’re not careful our conversations can turn into fact-listing exercises about what we did that day. I was also stressing out (as I usually do in the time period just before moving again) about my future… our future… what will it look like? where will we be? how will our career ambitions affect our relationship? what do we do with the fact that our families live on opposite sides of the country? why do I overanalyze everything?

Relationships (especially the long distance kind) aren’t always easy, but I was reminded this week that all the time and extra effort is definitely worth it, he is so worth it.  This week felt refreshing, like I fell in love with him again… and the questions – some of them are still there, but it’s okay. Someday when we’re married there will be other types of challenges – I guarantee there won’t ever be a time when we’re individually perfect or communicate perfectly. Life will inevitably throw a few curveballs anyways, and as long as we’re making decisions together, then we can work things out as they come along. Thankfully Nick is patient and kind – he loves me in such a sweet way, and I can’t help but feel grateful and blessed that we found each other. [Thanks to Chi Alpha and Xanga]

Okay… back to Ireland and our trip – the weather was unseasonably warm… no rain at all and lots of blue, sunny skies! =) We trekked from Dublin to Belfast to Derry to Coleraine & the Giant’s Causeway… then back to Dublin through Belfast. I wish I had carried a bit less because we often found it took much longer to get places than expected… and walking long distances with a full backpack, laptop, and shoulder bag can be a bit much. I’d love to go back someday and see more of the west coast and make it to the south… but for a week I think we did very well.

I’m here in a hostel with Nick trying to keep a stable internet connection for more than 2mins. Sadly it’s not happening and I’m hungry so I think we’re gonna jet off for dinner. We started in Dublin and the weather has been absolutely brilliant – and all is going well.
