I first started really thinking about this issue during a visit to the British Museum. I was handed a leaflet upon entering the area displaying the Parthenon Marbles (yes, the Parthenon from ancient Greece) – the pamphlet was essentially the museum’s justification for its decision not to return the artifacts to the Greek government.

Today I was reading this BBC article about the Egyptian Nefertiti bust that sits in Berlin and whose ownership is claimed by the German government. It reminded me of the ongoing battles between citizens, governments and museums.

It’s a tough call really – at the time the artifacts were ‘discovered’ by Europeans they were either the imperial rulers or friendly enough with them to allow excavations to occur. What would you think if you had to travel to Paris to see the Liberty Bell, the US Constitution, or some other national artifact? If it were part of a collection that traveled all over the world it’d be no big deal right – but if it were permanently owned and displayed by another government… well, that might just frustrate you.

Granted, it was foreigners who spent the energy and money to travel and excavate the abandoned (and usually heavily destroyed) ruins. The Greek government wants to reunite the pieces (those in London & those at the Acropolis museum in Athens) and restore the 2,500 year old monument… but, legally the British Museum doesn’t have to turn the pieces over since they were obtained by permission of the Ottomans when they ruled Greece at the turn of the 19th century and have been on display in London since 1816.

Although the law is not in favor of the countries of origin the Greeks have said that it is their moral right to be able to preserve and visit their history in their own country. The Egyptians haven’t even bothered to make such dramatic claims – instead, they simply have asked that certain pieces (such as the Nefertiti bust) be temporarily loaned to the Egyptians… although it’s highly unlikely that will ever occur.

I’ve seen a few comments about the UN Charter and the Iraq invasion – here is an article discussing Kofi Annan’s remarks you might find interesting:
